Treasurer John Kennedy announces re-election bid
The Advocate, Baton Rouge, LA:
After weeks of speculation, State Treasurer John Kennedy has made it official: He’s seeking a fifth term in the same office.
Kennedy’s name has frequently come up as a possible candidate for attorney general — or even governor (or U.S. senator should David Vitter be elected governor this year). Earlier this year, Kennedy was polling for several different races.
But Kennedy put all the speculation to rest and announced his intentions in an email to supporters Thursday, in which he noted the state’s budget crisis and his commitment to being a “fiscal watchdog.”
“It’s not easy to muster the courage and political will to make the tough choices needed to get our budget under control, but I’ll continue to challenge our leadership in state government and the federal government to confront those choices head on and stop the wasteful spending that burdens our taxpayers,” Kennedy wrote.
Campaign finance records show Kennedy, who switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party in 2007, has nearly $3.5 million in his campaign war chest. He was unopposed in his last re-election bid.
